Do you ever feel this pressure to take the fastest route to where you are heading in life so you get there quickly?
I have felt like this, as though there are these unwritten societal expectations to be where you are meant to be, but yesterday! We are expected to take the quickest routes, to fast track our way through life. If you were to plug a destination into Google Maps, it would give you the route which takes the least time, which is usually the motorway. And today I reflected on the fact that in life both professionally and personally, we can often feel this pressure to get somewhere via the motorway. And if we don’t reach our destination quickly, then we are ‘behind’.
But life isn’t like that and I don’t think we should feel like we are in a constant race against the clock and under pressure to find the fastest route. We should not feel like we have to rush through life.
Instead of taking the motorway, we can take the more scenic route. It is not the easier option, it could be argued as harder as there is not always a map when you are in the middle of the countryside, in fact sometimes you can’t get phone signal and it’s easy to get lost! So you have to trust your internal compass and gut instinct to navigate to where you want to be. Yes, this may add a extra miles onto your journey but I believe we will learn more about ourselves from driving along the countryside lanes- less noise allows us space to think and we won’t feel like we’re in a race against other cars that are speeding by, which often makes us feel behind. By taking the more scenic route, we will have more stories to tell and who knows where the journey might lead to!
Tonight, we purposefully went for a walk in the countryside, but next to a busy motorway during rush hour. You can still hear the noise from the motorway, but that doesn’t mean you have to join it.
Always choose your own route and don’t be afraid to take the more scenic one. The few extra miles could lead you to a destination more beautiful than you ever imagined. Admire the view along the way.
