About Us

Hello I’m Claire Chapman, the Founder of Woofs and Wellness and this is my dog Charlie the Cockapoo. He has helped me to navigate through a very difficult chapter of my life and is the inspiration behind what we do at Woofs and Wellness. It started as an Instagram account which I set up during the first lockdown to support others with their wellbeing and fast-forward to today and our new home is this space. My experiences with my mental health have led to me discovering that my purpose is to support others to navigate effectively through theirs. Even though we are talking about mental health more, in my opinion, we need to move at a much faster pace from talk to action. My approach to managing wellbeing is suitable for anyone and can be accessed right now– no waiting lists, no call backs. I hope that by being open and honest about my own experiences below, it will emphasise that no matter what you are going through, there is always hope that things can and will get better…

Following University, I have spent most of my adult life working as a Primary School Teacher; I feel most alive and fulfilled when helping others, it’s what ignites my spark. I loved my job, but sadly in 2018, after working in an environment that turned toxic with a culture of bullying as the norm, I had no choice but to leave. I was offered new jobs and leadership roles at other schools but I knew I was too affected by what had happened to pursue them.

I decided I would take the summer off and then get started on something new. Then I had a breakdown. Not the ‘breakdown over a broken nail’ sort, but a really scary, frightening, life-wrecking breakdown of my mind and body at age 27. It’s hard to write that. I had worked so hard to keep everything together and I couldn’t anymore. I had as many as 10 panic and anxiety attacks a day and throughout the night. My symptoms ranged from brain jolts to vision problems, difficulty walking, headaches, chest pain, breathlessness, whole body pain and fatigue, to name but a few. I struggled with reading, writing, my memory and for a period of time, I became mute. I became afraid of people and of life. I later learnt that my hypervigilant behaviours were a form of PTSD that had been born from working in an environment that frightened me. I lost my independence. I was then diagnosed with an Autoimmune Disease and Chronic Fatigue. I became too unwell to live in my own house, struggled to leave the house at all and moved back in with my parents who supported me in many ways. I will forever be thankful to my Therapist and my parents, who have supported me through the darkest of times and provided a safe space for me. Charlie, my dog, is also my biggest support; he says so much without saying anything at all. I truly believe that he is a gift and a blessing, he’s so much more than ‘just a dog’.

Woofs and Wellness was born during this difficult chapter of my life. I was in such a bad place with my mental and physical health and it felt impossible to find the right formula to reach a place of recovery; I was existing, not living. Instead of continuing to search for a formula on Google, I decided to create my own way. The Woofs and Wellness approach involves nature, mindfulness and of course, our four-legged friends too. You can click here to find out more about joining our supportive community. I know what it’s like to struggle and now I know what it’s like to feel more in control of my health and optimistic about the future- that’s what my approach has done for me. I went from being too anxious to leave the house, to now looking forward to getting out in nature as much as possible. I went from being lonely with only my thoughts for company, to now connecting with new friends across the globe, every day. I went from hopeless to hopeful.

I am not a Therapist or a Mental Health Professional, nor do I profess to be. Instead, I am someone who has first-hand experience of the world of mental health through my own experiences. I can speak its language fluently and I am determined to make a change and make a difference to help improve the wellbeing of so many others who feel how I felt. And that is why I am here, because I want to share the tools and tips that help me with a wider audience. I truly believe what I do and the way in which I do it can and does make a positive difference to wellbeing– that is the ethos which underpins Woofs and Wellness.

Annabel Amos’ Breakfast Show BBC Radio Northampton

On 26th April 2022, I was delighted to be invited to talk on Annabel Amos’ Breakfast Show on BBC Radio Northampton. I was given the opportunity to chat about all things Woofs and Wellness, from the conscious choices I made when designing our Members Area to the positive effects that Charlie has had on my mental health. We also discussed the impact of our weekend initiatives and how wonderful it is to have friends joining in and becoming W&W Members from all over the world! The last part of the interview was an opportunity for us to share our dream meal- our  ‘Desert Island Dishes’.  You can find out what we chose by listening to the interview below….( of course, as you can imagine, I was very influenced by what Charlie would choose!). Hope you enjoy listening to our interview…

An interview with Chance Litchfield on BBC Radio Northampton

Only two weeks after launching Woofs and Wellness on 16th April 2022, I was very excited to be invited onto Chance’s show to discuss my new venture, my experiences with my own mental health struggles and why I feel there is such a need for Woofs and Wellness.

BBC Radio Northampton

Last year, I was contacted by Kerrie Cosh- a local BBC Radio Presenter as she had seen the positive impact my #shareasmile movement was having on Instagram. She invited me onto her evening radio show to discuss why I started Charlie’s account, my story and the #shareasmile and #sundaysniffs movements. It was a truly wonderful experience to be able to talk about something I am so passionate about. At the end of the interview, Kerrie described it as the ‘most wholesome content we have ever had on the show!’ You can listen to a snippet of the interview below.

Feature on Northants Life Website

During Mental Health Week in 2021, we were featured in an article on the @northantslife website. I created something called ‘The Nature Series’ on @cockapoo_charlie_chapman to help get the conversation started about mental health and shared simple mindful practices to apply into our everyday lives. I wanted to demonstrate the power of nature in helping to reduce stress and anxiety whilst improving our overall wellbeing.
